Cougars are not hugely uncommon in Central Virginia, such that a sighting doesn't elicit the ZOMG!!!11!! response as seeing one in suburban Chicago. One was spotted not 5 miles from our house a few years ago. Apparently there are two lines in the region; one which is relatively common as far as large felines go, and one (the Eastern variety) that is greatly endangered. It is so endangered, that if you shoot one like the officers did above, you get in big trouble. The other kind.... not so much trouble. However, it's greatly unfortunate that you cannot readily distinguish the two varieties by sight; you have to examine the skull shape.
